How can I check my credit rating before I apply for a mortgage

Answer

Everyone has a credit rating (also known as a Credit Score).

If you want to see what yours is you'll need to pay a Credit Agency. Personally I use Experian as they tend to be more comprehensive than some others.

You can do the full process online although you may have to send certain documents to prove who you are.

If you find your credit score is lower than you expected you will be able to see why.

Remember credit agencies track all that they can but its possible they'll miss some things and, if you can prove they have got something wrong or absent, they will be more than happy to put things right.

I always strongly recommend buyers check out their own credit rating before they even start viewing properties. Mistakes made by credit agencies can be corrected but it takes time. Doing this after you have made an offer can cause delays and as Time Costs Deals this is one step you can take care of far in advance.
